Founded in 1901 when it gained independence from Britain, Australia now has the world’s 12th-largest economy and achieves high global rankings in quality of life, education, health, economic freedom, and civil liberties. Australia’s primary industries are mining exports, banking, telecommunications, and manufacturing, and eight Australian companies are on the Fortune Global 500 list, including BHP Billiton, Wesfarmers, and Woolworths, among others. One of the world's leading countries for workplace flexibility, Australia passed the Fair Work Act in 2009, citing that employees can request flexible work arrangements after a year with the same company if they are a parent, caregiver, have a disability, are over 55, or are experiencing domestic violence. Under the regulations, employers must honor the request unless it can be refused on “reasonable business grounds.” As a result, telecommuting is on the rise, with some companies, such as Cisco Australia, having as many as 40 percent of employees classified as “mobile workers.” The Australian federal government has also set a goal to have at least 12 percent of employees teleworking once a week by the year 2020.
