The second-most populous country in the world and the seventh-largest by area, India is an economically and culturally influential South Asian country. With an incredibly rich history dating back to 30,000 years ago, India became a nation in 1947 when it achieved independence from the British Empire. The Indian constitution was completed in 1950, establishing India as the largest democracy in the world. Today, India has one of the world’s fastest-growing economies by GDP, thanks in part to ongoing growth in the telecommunication, automotive, pharmaceutical, and IT industries. The largest industry in India remains agriculture, with the country ranking second in the world for farm output. Other important enterprises include petroleum products, gems and jewelry, textiles, mining, energy, infrastructure, engineering, retail, banking and finance, and tourism. Made up of 29 states and seven union territories, India is home to diverse cultures and has 22 official languages, though many more are spoken. Despite its separation from Britain, English, along with Hindi, has remained a universal language of communication in India between citizens from different states and backgrounds. India’s capital is New Delhi, and its largest cities include Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bangalore, which is known as “the Silicon Valley of India” because of its boom in information technology jobs. Although much of the country’s population is not yet touched by the advent of flexible work, remote opportunities are growing rapidly in the country’s IT and telecommunications sectors.
